The Veronicas tonight at the Fillmore Detroit
The Australian chart-topping electro-pop/rock band The Veronicas is coming to the venue formerly known as the State Theater tonight. Tickets are still available for the 7 p.m. show.
The band, led by identical twins and Brisbane, Australian-natives Jessica and Lisa Origliassio, is headlining a U.S. tour for the first time since 2006. They recently performed at the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas and are rumored to be making a guest appearance this season on the CW show 90210.

Party Mexico-style in Detroit

Heading to Mexico this Cinco de Mayo is out of the question thanks to swine flu — ahem, H1N1 — but there are plenty of ways to celebrate the Mexican-American day without leaving Metro Detroit.
Southwest Detroit will be at the center of the action with live mariachi music and folkloric dance in Clark Park all day Saturday and Sunday. There also will be a parade running down W. Vernor, an 8K Fun Run and two shows featuring the local Mexican-style wrestling group “Revolucha” on Sunday. For a list of all Clark park events and more information, go to cincodemayodetroit.org.
For those who prefer to do their celebrating indoors, Detroit Synergy is hosting a Saturday pub crawl through Detroit’s Mexican eateries, starting at 12:30 p.m. at Xochimilco on Bagley St. and continuing on to El Zocalo, Los Galanes and Mexican Village.
And if heading to Detroit isn’t your thing, there are options galore outside the city. The Detroit News’ Melody Baetens put together a list of festivities in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties taking place this weekend and beyond.
Finally, if you just want a taste of Mexico to break up an otherwise un-celebratory weekend, another article in The News shows that it’s possible to get your fill of authentic Mexican-style tacos while gassing up at BP stations in Detroit and Dearborn.
Revive Detroit, party with Mayor Cockrel
Attention CNN Money: Not all young people want to leave Detroit in the dust (“Detroit’s youth: We’ll leave if we have to,” April 24, CNNMoney.com).
D-town creativity cultivator Detroit by Design is hosting a meet and greet tomorrow night featuring Mayor Kenneth Cockrel, Jr., hoping to rally the city’s young and talented behind the community.
The group hosts a monthly bash for artistically inclined young Detroiters called S2dio that showcases local music, art and photography. They’re dubbing this weekend’s event “a unique evening of entertainment w/ key Detroit creative, cultural and neighborhood community leaders.”
An invitation posted on the group’s blog in March, which advertised the date as April 24 instead of April 25, says the night will focus on “young professionals and organizations in our community supporting Detroit’s creative talent, cultural programs, and neighborhood development.”
